  • The Notice of Application for 2024 SWJTU Self-Supported Graduate Students Program

    I. About SWJTU

    Founded in 1896 as the “Imperial Chinese Railway College”, Southwest Jiaotong University (SWJTU) is the first institution of higher engineering education in China. SWJTU was founded to train China’s own railway engineers. By training our graduates to master cutting-edge technologies and to strive for excellence, we have been shaping the development of China's rail transit industry from the beginning. We have more than 300,000 graduates whose ideas, innovations and actions have generated a positive impact in China and the world.

    SWJTU is situated in Chengdu, Sichuan’s capital, and is known as the home of the beloved Panda Bear. Our hometown, a “garden city” is a key junction city along the “Belt and Road”. SWJTU boasts a well-developed student training system granting bachelor’s, master’s and PhD degrees. It consists of 27 schools to offer programs in 4 main categories: engineering, science, life science and liberal arts. Among them, there are 2 First-level National Key Disciplines, 10 Second-level National Key Disciplines, 18 First-level Doctoral Degree Programs, 41 First-level Master’s Degree Programs and 11 post-doctoral research stations. The first-level discipline of Traffic Engineering tops the national list among all the universities. Other leading majors are Geomatics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Management Science & Engineering.

    Among more than 2,700 full-time teachers, there are 10 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and 17 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Nearly 50 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Academy of Engineering and Nobel Prize winners have been hired as part-time (honorary) professors. There are 13 National Technological Innovation Platforms and 36 Provincial and Ministerial Scientific Research Base in the university.

    4. Eligibility:

    To be eligible, the applicant must:

    Be a citizen of a country other than the People’s Republic of China and be in good health;

    Those who apply for master degree programs in China should hold a bachelor’s degree or equivalent, excel in academic performance, and should be generally under the age of 35;

    Those who apply for doctoral degree programs in China should hold a master’s degree or equivalent, excel in academic performance, and should be generally under the age of 40.

    6.Application Materials:

    1) A Copy of the Applicant’s Passport

    Please carefully prepare your passport which must be valid at least 6 months before the visa is obtained.

    2) Notarized Highest Diploma

    Prospective diploma recipients must submit official proof of student status or expected graduation date by their current school. Documents in languages other than Chinese or English must be attached with notarized Chinese or English translations.

    3) Academic Transcripts (in Chinese or English)

    Transcripts in languages other than Chinese or English must be attached with notarized Chinese or English translations.

    4) Self-introduction, Study Plan or Research Proposal (in Chinese or English)

    A minimum of 1000 words in Chinese or English.

    5) Foreigner Physical Examination Form (photocopy)

    The original copy should be kept by the applicant. The form is uniformly printed by Chinese healthy quarantine departments. It must be written in English and can be downloaded from Foreigner Physical Examination Form. The physical examinations must cover all of the items listed in the Foreigner Physical Examination Form (Click to download). Incomplete forms or forms without the signature of the attending physician, or the official stamp of the hospital, or a sealed photograph of the applicant are considered as invalid. Please carefully plan your physical examination schedule as the result is valid for only 6 months.

    6) Recommendation Letters (in Chinese or English)

    Applicants for Master’s Degree or Doctoral Degree programs must submit two recommendation letters in Chinese or English from professors or associate professors of related fields.

    7) Financial Guarantee: An official letter from a bank or financial institution certified by local Chinese Embassy or Consulate General is required. Funds must show at least: one academic year tuition.

    8) Language Proficiency: Students selecting the instruction language of Chinese must provide the certificate of the HSK Level 5 or above; Students who select the instruction language of English and are non-native English speakers must have good English proficiency of listening, speaking, reading and writing and are able to communicate specialized research with the supervisors smoothly and finish degree study in English. Please provide the copy of TOFEL, IELTS or other English skill certificate if the applicant has.

    9) Non-Criminal Record Report: Non-Criminal Record Report provided by authorities of the country or permanent residence of the applicant. If the applicant is unable to provide this document, as a substitute, the applicant could contact the applied university to sign a non-criminal record commitment.

    10) Statutory guardians documents: Applicants under the age of 18 must submit relevant documents about their statutory guardians in China.

    The applicant who passes the preliminary review needs to pay application fees of RMB 400, which will not be refunded whether the applicant is finally admitted or not;

    Professors or related academic schools may interview the applicant. Please make sure the phone number and email address are correct in your application;
