Plan for the Recruitment of Distinguished Professors/Associate Professors at SWJTU-Leeds Joint School
Article 1 This plan is prepared to attract young talents overseas, give full play to the prestigious resources of both University of Leeds (Leeds) and Southwest Jiaotong University (SWTJU) in their cooperation on joint programmes, accelerate the introduction and cultivation of outstanding young talents for the Joint School (Chinese-foreign cooperatively-run school), and further promote the quality of academic faculty in the process of internationalization.
Article 2 Recruitment Criteria
(1) The applicant shall be a holder of a doctor's degree from a famous overseas university, or shall have more than 2 years of postdoctoral research experience at a famous overseas university or research institution.
(2) The applicant shall be highly proficient in English and capable of teaching in English.
(3) The applicant shall major in science, engineering or English.
(4) The applicant shall have outstanding academic performance and potentials (Applicant is required to submit proof of 5 high-level representative achievements in the past five years and 3 letters of recommendation from internationally renowned scholars including his own supervisors).
(5) The applicant should generally not be old than 35 at the time of his application.
Article 3 Recruitment Procedures
(1) The candidates for preliminary review are determined by the Talented Youth Recruitment Team of the Joint school.
(2) An expert panel for the academic assessment of the talented youth shall be established and responsible for evaluating the academic performance and potentials of the proposed candidates. The expert panel shall comprehensively evaluate the candidate’s academic achievements and competence in teaching in English through interview, trial lecture, defense, etc. , and determine the ones for employment.
(3) The Joint School submits the list of candidates for employment to the Human Resources
Article 4Employment and Management
The Joint School does not set a limit on the number of positions for distinguished professors and distinguished associate professors. “Preliminary Employment + Dual Employment” Policies shall be followed at the School.
(1) Qualified candidates can be preliminarily employed as distinguished associate professors of the Joint School according to his/her educational background, academic performance and reputation. The excellent ones, can be preliminarily employed as distinguished professors. Preliminary employment policy shall be followed with a term of three years and up-or-out policy implemented within a span of two terms.
(2) Under the dual employment policy, the candidate is first of all a faculty member of the Joint School and shall also assist in academic work of other schools during his term of preliminary employment. After due course, the candidate is transferred to the School with the programme of his/her research interest and becomes one of the tenured faculty. However, he shall continue to accomplish teaching task assigned by the Joint School.
(3) The employment contract shall be signed by the candidate, the Human Resources Office at SWJTU, the Joint School, and the School with the programme of his/her research interest.
Article 5 Remuneration and Support
(1) The salary for every candidate shall be negotiated and determined on a case-by-case basis and shall be paid on an annual basis. Salary standard: 300,000+ yuan per year for distinguished associate professors and 350,000+yuan per year for distinguished professors (before tax, including the personal contribution of various social insurance and housing allowance). For excellent talents with high-level achievements, rewards shall be given in accordance with relevant provisions of SWJTU.
(2) Relevant supports shall be given and preferential policies of the nation, city and SWJTU shall be applicable to talents so recruited.
(3) During the term of the preliminary employment, the expenses (mainly including salary, settling-in allowance, start-up expenses for research and SWJTU’s share of various social insurances and housing allowances required for the candidates) are covered in the budget of the Joint School.
Article 6Assessment during the Term of Employment and Career Development
(1) During the term of preliminary employment, the duties and responsibilities of the candidates shall be jointly determined by the Joint School and the School with the programme of his/her research interest after due consultation, and the Joint School shall be responsible for the assessment.
(2) The candidates can apply for professional title certification at SWJTU and shall be assessed by competent bodies of SWJTU with due consideration given to the certification criteria for professors and associate professors at the University of Leeds. Successful applicants shall be employed and assessed as tenured faculty members of the SWJTU.
(3) The candidates employed can apply for a series of support programs for talent cultivation of SWJTU, and preferential treatment and supports will be given to successful applicants.
