Part I. About the Program
Program Objectives
This program is open to fresh university graduates as well as the experienced professionals from different countries, and is designed to train those students in the related field of transportation planning and management.
The program aims to
- provide students with an opportunity to develop functional expertise, strategic perspectives that they require to operate effectively in a changing transportation environment or to understand such an environment.
- help students to learn both the successes and failures in China's traffic and transportation engineering.
- introduce students the techniques of transportation planning and management to meet the needs of transportation modernization, as well as sharpen their leadership and communication skills.
Program Mode / Structure
Instruction:
Students are expected to complete the program full time for 3 years. In the first year, students must finish the study of relevant courses. And they are also supposed to spend at least 1 year to write thesis. The language of instruction is English. Classes will incorporate a mix of lectures, seminars, case discussions, tutorials, presentations and so on. Upon application, students could also choose some courses taught in Chinese.

Master Thesis
(1)Topic selection
Students are expected to select a topic which has important application value and theoretical significance to the construction of national economy, and it also should be combined with tutor's research projects as far as possible. The selected topic must be approved by mentor and through the arguments.
(2)Thesis proposal
Students are required to complete the thesis proposal during the third semester. In the report meeting, students should solicit opinions widely, and the thesis proposal will be determined by the related discipline experts after the examination and approval. The contents and requirements of the thesis proposal consist of: dynamic and research level about thesis topic; the purpose and significance of the selected topic; the research contents and research methods; the results and level expected to achieve; thesis writing arrangements; qualifications for subject research and so on.
(3)Thesis writing program
Students are supposed to formulate a detailed thesis writing program under the guidance of tutor. In the program, there should be a detailed arrangements and instructions about research methods, experiments, funds and equipment, thesis writing deadline and the results expected to achieve.
(4)Thesis appraisement and defense and degree awarding should be executed according to relevant regulations of Southwest Jiaotong University.
Degree Requirements
Students are required to successfully complete 26 credit-worth course work and a master thesis and thesis defense within the required time period. After meeting the above requirements and with the approval of Southwest Jiaotong University Degree Committee, the master degree will be awarded.
Degree Program in Computer Science and Technology
Ⅰ.Brief Introduction to the Discipline
This discipline was founded in 1960 which predecessor is "Computing Technology" program established by Professor Jianyou Cao, the academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences. It was the first batch disciplines in Chinese universities being able to award Master Degree. It has become a key construction subject supported by “211 project”, “985 special platform”, “2011 plan” and the National Laboratory of Railway Transportation (under construction) in the university. Presently, it owns the first-level doctoral discipline and a post-doctoral research center, ranking top 1% based on Thomson Reuter's Essential Science Indicators (ESI).
This discipline aims at serving national strategy and stepping on the international frontier, and takes the cloud services and intelligent information processing technology and their applications as the main line of discipline construction. It strives to establish a world-renowned research-oriented discipline and be expected to take a leading position in China through strengthening its superiorities and features, building the first-class academic team, cultivating the first-class integrated talents and making high-level and symbolic achievements. Its main superiorities and features include the following aspects.
First-class team. There is an innovation team in national key fields, named as Innovation Team of Cloud Services Platform Technology. As the leader of the "Strategic Alliance of Technology Innovation in Scientific Cloud Service Industry", this team works together with 27 corporations such as Inspur Group to improve advantages of Cloud Service Industrial Chain. It also includes talents such as the member of the National Committee of CPPCC, the member of Department of Information of Science and Technology Commission, Ministry of Education, the leading talent of Science and Technology Innovation of "Ten Thousand People Plan", the leader of Expert Group of the National Major R&D Plan, the deputy leader of Expert Group of National Science and Technology Support Plan, the chief expert of National 863 Program, the National Excellent Science and Technology Worker, the winner of Huo Yingdong Youth Award, etc. It has a member recognized as the top 1% Scientists (ranked 908/2955) in the field of Computer Science based on ESI, the fellow of International Rough Set Society. Its members have served as the panel member of National Natural Science and Technology Progress Award, and the panel member of National Natural Science Foundation of China, editors of several international SCI journals (e.g., Knowledge-based Systems, Information Fusion), the chair of IEEE CIS CD, the associate chair of ACM CD, the treasurer of ACM CKDD, general chairs or program/organization chairs of more than 10 international conferences, the Vice President of China Graphics Society, the Vice Director of Standardization Committee of National Technology Product Document, etc.
Outstanding Achievements. In the last five years, a large number of important scientific results have been achieved and published in a variety of top-ranking international journals (e.g. IEEE TKDE, IEEE TIFS, IEEE TIP) and top-ranking domestic journals (e.g. Science China, Chinese Journal of Computers, Journal of Software), as well as top-ranking international conferences (e.g. KDD, AAAI, IJCAI) and so on. There are more than 100 papers are indexed by Science Citation Index (SCI), among which there are 2 ESI hot papers and 9 ESI highly cited papers. We have published 6 monographs and edited 7 SCI special issues. In terms of research grants, we have undertaken (as PIs)/participated(as co-PIs) in more than 100 projects with a total funding of over 91 million Yuan, in which there are 32 national projects. A number of scientific research awards have been received, including 1 Second-class Prize for the National Science and Technology Progression Award, 1 First-class Prize for the Sichuan Province Science and Technology Progression Award, and 1 Second-class Prize for the Natural Science Award of the Science and Research Achievements in Universities, Ministry of Education, P.R. China. More than 50 patents/software copyrights have been either submitted or licensed. A number of members have been invited as keynote speakers in dozens of international/national conferences. In addition, more than 10 awards from conferences and world leading professional communities were obtained, e.g. best paper awards of international/national conferences, ACM CD Best Dissertation Awards and IEEE CD Best Paper Awards.
Advanced Platform. This discipline established a Joint Research Institute oriented to Industry Internet with General Electric Company (GE), USA. It has the advanced platforms including the National Experiment Teaching Demonstration Center of Rail Transit Information Engineering and Technology, the National Engineering Laboratory for Urban Rail Transit System Safety and Security. Besides, we established Modern Services Research Institute of Sichuan Province, which is one of the 49 first-batch Modern Services Industry Innovation and Development Demonstration Enterprises by Ministry of Science and Technology, P.R. China. It also has 7 provincial key laboratories/engineering technology research centers
Distinctive Achievement in Applications. The discipline accelerates the development of Science and Technology Services Industry in China. It is among the 10 first-batch National Science and Technology Services Industry (STSI) Innovation and Development Pilots. Also, it is one of supporting institutions for Modern Services Industry (MSI) Innovation and Development Cities. Therefore, this discipline provides strong support in the innovation and development of the STSI of China. In addition, a complete hierarchy for the fundamentals and technologies of Multi-core Industrial Chain was proposed. The first cloud platform for the manufacturing industry of China was successfully constructed, i.e., ASP/SaaS based Manufacturing Industry Value Chain Collaborative Services Platform. With the world leading practice mode, the cloud platform stimulated an output of 38 billion Yuan and offered a breakthrough in the cloud collaborative services mode. Meanwhile, the discipline also co-founded the Digital Simulation Platform for High-Speed Train of National Laboratory of Rail Transit, China. Its members have been PIs and Co-PIs for many key projects, e.g., the passenger information system for the high-speed experimental train and the railway ticket system, which provides a strong support for the consistently independent innovation in the field of Rail Transit Science and Technology.
Outstanding International Cooperation and Communication. This discipline conducts a comprehensive strategic cooperation with GE, USA, and works closely with Microsoft Research Asia. It has a “dual Ph.D.” project with University of Technology Sydney (UTS), Australia, and is one of the project members of “China-France 4+4” dual masters degree. More than 30 foreign doctoral/Master students have been cultivated in this discipline. In addition, more than 10 doctoral students have been co-cultivated with world-renowned universities. More than a dozen international/national academic conferences have been hosted/held. In recent years, more than 20 members have visited many famous universities (e.g., Stanford University, University of California at Berkeley) and important companies (e.g., Google, Facebook, IBM, HP). More than 20 foreign scholars have been invited for exchanging and cooperation per year on average.

An international student for Doctoral Degree should accomplish the course study and earn at least 17 credits, which include public courses (7 credits), specialized courses (7 credits) and academic training (3 credits).Public courses include Basic Chinese I, Basic Chinese II, China Overview, Chinese Culture (each of two credits) and Contemporary China (1 credit), among which Basic Chinese I,China Overview and Contemporary China are compulsory. Academic training includes Academic Lectures (1 credit) and Frontier Academic Seminars (2 credits).

Degree Program in Rail Transit Electrification and Information Engineering
Ⅰ. Brief Introduction to the Discipline
1. Orientation and Goal
History: In 1949, the discipline of electrical engineering (EE) was established by Academician Cao Jianyou of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 1981, it was granted to confer PhD degrees (in the first batch) and in 1987 it was awarded the National Key Discipline. In 1999, it was awarded one of the Tier-1 Disciplines to confer PhD degrees and host postdoctoral researchers, under which the Tier-2 discipline Electrical Power Systems and Automation was a National Key Discipline and the Tier-2 discipline Power Electronics and Electric Drives was a National Key Discipline (Being fostered).
Orientation: To educate students, carry out research and serve the society in the areas of Electrification and Automation of Rail Transport.
Objectives: To lead the scientific advancement and personnel training of Electrification and Automation of Rail Transport, and to develop the discipline into a first-class discipline in the world.
2. Advantages and Features
2.1 Well-complemented and Prominent Faculty
The discipline of EE possesses a large pool of prominent scholars and professors, including two academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, three national 1000-plan talents, two Yangtze chair professors, four National Distinguished Youths, one national 1000-plan young talent, two candidates for the National Pacesetter Project, two winners of National Award for Distinguished Experts, six Provincial Hundred (Thousand) Talents, six leaders of Academic Technology in Sichuan, nine candidates for leaders of Academic Technology in Sichuan, three winners of Outstanding Youths, five experts who receive Special Allowance from the State Council, one winner of National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Awards, and three candidates for National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Awards, one winner of National Excellent Teacher Award and two winners of Sichuan Excellent Teacher Award.
2.2 First-class Wide-ranging Facilities and Platforms
With the support of the 211-project, 985-project, and the 2011 Collaborative Innovation Partnerships, the discipline is the home of six national and provincial platforms, including the National Engineering Research Center for Electrification and Automation of Rail Transportation and the Key Laboratory of the Department of Education for Maglev Trains. The discipline is also an important part of the National Key Laboratory of Traction Power Systems. Moreover, discipline is the home of the National Demonstration Center for Experiments in Electrical Engineering, the National Teaching Center of Simulations in Electrification and Automation of Rail Transportation, and the joint National Demonstration Center for Experiments in Physics Education.
2.3 Fruitful Achievements in Rail-Transport Education
Teaching-reform has been consecutively awarded the first prize of National Teaching Achievement once and second prize three times. Faculty members have received recognition for excellence in teaching with two Nation-wide Shared Courses, four National Elite Courses, one National Open Course, and seven Elite Courses in Sichuan. We have published seven textbooks under the 11th five-year plan, ten textbooks under the 12th five-year plan and seven textbooks under the plan of the Railway Ministry. One paper got National Outstanding Doctoral Dissertations Award and three papers were nominated for National Outstanding Doctoral Dissertations.
2.4 Advanced Scientific Researches
The EE discipline of SWJTU has been leading the advancement of rail-transport technologies. We established the Electric Transportation before the era of electrifying the railway to educate the talents required. We proposed the voltage scheme for electrified railways at the beginning of electrifying the railway. During the process of electrifying the railway, we developed the first remote-operated micro-computer-controlled traction power systems, the first automation system for sub-stations, and the first vehicle for detecting faults in overhead systems. During the development of high-speed trains, we developed the first monitoring system for the distribution system of high-speed trains, the first digital traction substation, the first 6C system for overhead systems, the world’s first co-phase traction power system, and the world’s first energy-saving traction transformer, etc. We have also developed the first maglev passenger train and the longest commercial medium-low speed maglev trains in Changsha.
2.5 Graduates with High Prestige
About 80% of the managers, both administrative and technological, in electrification and automation of rail transport graduated from this discipline. Graduates Ding Rongjun and Jiang Xianguo are the only academician and design master in the field.
2.6 Close Collaboration with Industry
The close collaboration with industry, e.g. the development of the first monitoring system for the distribution system of high-speed trains, has not only supported the development of the high-speed trains in China but also it has advanced the development of the discipline.
3. Set-ups of the Discipline
The discipline of Electrical Engineering consists of several sub-disciplines, including Traction Power System and Its Automation, Traction and Drive, Power System and Its Automation, Power Electronics and Electrical Drives, Motors and Electric Apparatus, New Technology of Electrical Theory, High Voltage and Insulation Technologies, Electrification and Automation of Rail Transport, Electromagnetic Suspension and Superconducting Engineering etc.
4. Impacts
4.1 Irreplaceable Role in Rail Transport and Significant Social Impact
The EE Team has provided important consultancies to the strategic planning and the standardization of the rail transport sector, and provided a large amount of technological consultancies and services to the companies in this sector, bringing significant social impact. We have developed and provided numerous key technologies and equipment to support the fast growth of China’s railway industry. For example, almost all the monitoring systems for the distribution systems of high-speed trains, 80% of monitoring systems for the key operational traction equipment, and 65% of the automation systems for traction substations are originated from the discipline. A troop of our excellent graduates worked in the field of rail transit and the textbooks we edited are widely used in related colleges and universities. Every year, 600-1000 administrative and technical backbones from the Railway Ministry (China Railway Engineering Corporation) participate in our training program.
2. Extensive Academic Exchanges with High Reputation Worldwide
The discipline of EE has established long-term collaborative partnerships with over 30 renowned companies and over 20 universities, including UIC, Cornell University and Tokyo Institute of Technology. We have set up joint laboratories with leading international companies, such as Rockwell, Schneider Electric, and Freescale, and a joint Engineering Research Center in Hong Kong with Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
More than 20 world-renowned scholars are appointed as part-time visiting professors or advisory professors, including Tongwen Chen (Academician of Canada Academy of Engineering, Canada), Steven A. Boggs (Toronto University, Canada), and Kinji Mori (Waseda University, Japan).
Faculty members of EE play important role in national and international professional organizations. For example, Academician Qian Qingquan is an advisor to several national and international journals. Professor Kemin Zhou is a Fellow of IEEE, IFAC and AAAS and an Associate Editor for six leading international journals including IEEE AC. Professors Wu Guangning, He Zhengyou and Chen Weirong are Fellows of IET. Zhang Gexiang is the Founder of the International Society of Membrane Computing and Feng Xiaoyun is a member of the Committee of the Electrical Engineering of the State Council.

Ⅵ.Course and Credit Requirements
【PhD student】
An international student for Doctoral Degree should accomplish the course study and earn at least 17 credits, which include public courses (7 credits), specialized courses (7 credits) and academic training (3 credits).Public courses include Basic Chinese I, Basic Chinese II, China Overview, Chinese Culture (each of two credits) and Contemporary China (1 credit), among which Basic Chinese I,China Overview and Contemporary China are compulsory. Academic training includes Academic Lectures (1 credit) and Frontier Academic Seminars (2 credits).
【Master of academic degree】&【Master of professional degree】
An international student for Master Degree is required to accomplish the course study and earn at least 26 credits, which include public courses (at least 9 credits), specialized courses (15 credits) and academic & practice training (2 credits).Public courses are compulsory, including Basic Chinese I, Basic Chinese II, China Overview, Chinese Culture (each of two credits) and Contemporary China (1 credit). Academic & practice training includes Academic Lectures and Scientific Research Practice, each of one credit.
Ⅶ. Thesis/Dissertation Requirements

d) The main subject and conclusion of the thesis should display somewhat theoretical or practical contribution to academic knowledge or the construction of the national economy.
e) The thesis should exhibit the student’s mastery of theoretical methodology and professional skills.
f) The thesis should demonstrate a new idea, indicating that the student can conduct scientific research or technical work independently.
【PhD student】
d) The main subject and conclusion of the dissertation should make a significant theoretical or practical contribution to academic knowledge or the construction of the national economy.
e) The dissertation should exhibit student mastery of theoretical methodology and professional skills involved in the dissertation.
f) The dissertation should demonstrate originality in science or technology, indicating that the student can conduct academic research independently.
Master Program in Highway and Railway Engineering
Part I. About the Program
Program Objectives
This program is open to fresh university graduates as well as the experienced professionals from different countries, and is designed to train those students in the related field of Highway and Railway Engineering.
The program aims to
- provide students with an opportunity to develop functional expertise, strategic perspectives that they require to operate effectively in a changing transportation environment or to understand such an environment.
- help students to learn both the successes and failures in China's highway and railway engineering.
- introduce students the techniques of highway and railway engineering to meet the needs of transportation modernization, as well as sharpen their leadership and communication skills.
Program Mode / Structure
Instruction:
Students are expected to complete the program full time for 2 years. In the first year, students must finish the study of relevant courses. And they are also supposed to spend 1 year to write thesis. The language of instruction is English. Classes will incorporate a mix of lectures, seminars, case discussions, tutorials, presentations and so on. Upon application, students could also choose some courses taught in Chinese.

Master Thesis
(1) Topic selection
Students are expected to select a topic which has important application value and theoretical significance to the construction of national economy, and it also should be combined with tutor's research projects as far as possible. The selected topic must be approved by mentor and through the arguments.
(2) Thesis proposal
Students are required to complete the thesis proposal during the second semester. In the report meeting, students should solicit opinions widely, and the thesis proposal will be determined by the related discipline experts after the examination and approval. The contents and requirements of the thesis proposal consist of: dynamic and research level about thesis topic; the purpose and significance of the selected topic; the research contents and research methods; the results and level expected to achieve; thesis writing arrangements; qualifications for subject research and so on.
(3) Thesis writing program
Students are supposed to formulate a detailed thesis writing program under the guidance of tutor. In the program, there should be a detailed arrangements and instructions about research methods, experiments, funds and equipment, thesis writing deadline and the results expected to achieve.
(4) Thesis appraisement and defense and degree awarding should be executed according to relevant regulations of Southwest Jiaotong University.
Degree Requirements
Students are required to successfully complete 26 credit-worth course work and a master thesis and thesis defense within the required time period. After meeting the above requirements and with the approval of Southwest Jiaotong University Degree Committee, the master degree will be awarded.
