Liberal Arts and Social Science Research

From 2012 to 2019, the number of scientific research platforms at and above the provincial and ministerial level in the university increased from 3 to 17, among which the representative ones include one demonstration center for mental health education and psychological counseling serving for all colleges and universities in China, one base jointly built at the ministerial and university level, three bases filed in the Department of International Cooperation and Exchanges of the Ministry of Education, one key research base for philosophy and social sciences of Sichuan Province, two "2011 Collaborative Innovation Centers" at the provincial level, etc.

The innovation team of the Ministry of Education: the Behavioral Decision Theory and Its Application in Management

The innovative team of the Ministry of Education, led by Jia Jianmin, a chair professor selected in the "Chang Jiang Scholars Program" funded by the Ministry of Education and a winner of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, was approved at the end of 2008. This is the first team promoting innovative management funded by the Ministry of Education in Southwest China and the 5th team of its kind funded by the Ministry of Education. Through 10 years of efforts, the team has achieved fruitful achievements in academic research, training and social services. The team members have had more than 900 articles published, of which more than 200 articles were published on journals listed in the index of SCI (Science Citation Index) and SSCI (Social Science Citation Index) such as Operations Research, Journal of Banking and Finance, Marketing Letters, European Journal of Operational Research, Transportation Research, Telecommunications Policy; two projects have been approved as one of the Major Projects to be supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China; more than 60 projects have been approved as projects to be supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China or the National Social Science Fund of China and more than 50 projects have been approved as provincial and ministerial projects. More than 30 monographs and 8 textbooks have been published. Five team members have been awarded as New Century Excellent Talent of the Ministry of Education, two have been awarded as Outstanding Young Academic and Technological Leader of Sichuan Province, and five have been awarded as the Expert who has made outstanding contributions in Sichuan Province. The team has won 12 second and third prizes of Excellent Achievements in Humanities & Social Sciences of the Ministry of Education and Sichuan Province. Six national- and provincial-level high-quality courses have been created. Six students that the team mentored have won the title of Excellent Graduates of Sichuan Province or their theses have been awarded as Excellent Doctoral Thesis of Sichuan Province. The proposals/suggestions the team submitted to Sichuan Provincial People's Congress have repeatedly been highly appraised by Sichuan Provincial Public Security Department, Sichuan Provincial Health Department, the General Office of the People's Government of Sichuan Province and other government departments.




Demonstration Center for Mental Health Education and Consultation of the Ministry of Education In Colleges and Universities in China

The Demonstration Center for Mental Health Education and Consultation of the Ministry of Education was incubated and established in 2015, which is committed to mental health education research and psychological counseling of college students in the new era, key personnel training, think tank and social services. Under the leadership of Professor Ning Weiwei, the Demonstration Center has played an active exemplary and leading role in scientific research, teaching, cultural innovation, key personnel training, think tank and social services, whose achievements have been recognized by leadership at all levels of the Ministry of Education.

The Demonstration Center has successively organized two meetings on mental health education in colleges and universities in China and several training courses of key mental health mentors. Relying on the Demonstration Center, the first-level degree program of psychology has been established, which has effectively supported the discipline construction of the university. The Demonstration Center has actively strengthened the related research on psychology and mental health education with Chinese characteristics, took the lead in building an innovation system of mental health education in China in line with the “five-sphere integrated plan", and won the second prize in National Teaching Achievement Awards in Higher Education. It has promoted the psychological and cultural development themed as "Love Yourself" and won the grand prize for the development of campus culture in colleges and universities. The Demonstration Center has also set up a national "first-class course" cluster of mental health and launched the online courses on the "xuexi.cn" app, aiming to influence the society in many aspects and angles and through different platforms.

The ideas and experience of constructing the Demonstration Center have been popularized and widely recognized. In 2017, Chen Baosheng, Minister of Education, visited the platform laboratory for inspection and guidance and fully affirmed the work of the Demonstration Center.


National Interdisciplinary Institute on Aging (NIIA)/ International Health Academy

National Interdisciplinary Institute on Aging (NIIA) was established in May 2015. It is the first national scientific research base on aging (SWJTU) approved by Office of the National Working Committee on Aging to be located in a university. NIIA has established substantial partnership in teaching and research with various international organizations such as World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA), International Institute of Administrative Sciences (IIAS), and internationally renowned universities and research institutions including CSEND, Institute for Management Development (IMD), Erasmus University Rotterdam of Netherlands, Seoul National University of South Korea, Yonsei University of South Korea, Keio University of Japan, National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies of Japan, University of Tsukuba of Japan, Chuo University of Japan, Meiji University of Japan, University of Venice of Italy, University of Minnesota of the USA, University of Ottawa of Canada, Thammasat University of Thailand and Technological University of Malaysia. NIIA was rated as "Key Think Tank of Colleges and Universities for Sichuan Provincial Committee of the CPC" by the General Office of the Sichuan Provincial Committee of CPC in 2016. It has issued Report on Retired Life Quality Index in Chinese Large and Medium-sized Cities 2015/2016 (blue book series of Social Sciences Academic Press of China), Report on Living Conditions of the Aged in Sichuan 2016 and Guide to the Buildings and Settlements Suitable for the Aged. NIIA has undertaken the sub-project under the “Major Project” titled “Study and Develop Marxist Theory”: A Study on the Basic Connotations and Significance of General Secretary Xi Jinping's New Ideas, Thoughts and Strategies for Effectively Dealing with the Aging of Population and the research project of the "13th Five-year Plan" for the development of aging industry in China: A Study on Policies and Measures to Further Mobilize Social Capital and Force to Participate in the Cause for the Aging Population and Aging Industry Development During the 13th Five-year Plan Period, as well as more than 20 national-level, provincial- and ministerial-level research projects approved as the projects to be supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China , National Social Science Fund of China, and Humanities and Social Sciences Projects to be supported by the Ministry of Education.

In March 2016, given another name, "International Health Preservation Academy", NIIA aimed to make use of the Institute's rich international academic and industrial resources to promote industrial integration in crossing fields such as agroforestry, health care & aged care, intelligent medical treatment, culture & sports & tourism, health management and ecological human settlements to enhance the value of the aging industry in domestic cities and large cities, empower the industry and increase its efficiency, and creatively carry out the plan for the training of inter-disciplinary talents and the building of knowledge system in health industry. NIIA has presided over dozens of projects entrusted by the government and enterprises. In recent years in NIIA, efforts have been made to promote the establishment of the "Asia-Pacific International Health and Wellness Tourism Alliance" and the "International Cooperation Network for Education and Training of Healthcare Talents". NIIA will soon issue A Case Study on Best Practices of World Healthcare Cities and Standards and Best Practices for the Construction of the Communities Suitable for the Aged.



"Chinese Traditional Classic Books Popularity Base" of Sichuan Province

Now there are 36 full-time and part-time staff members in the "Chinese Traditional Classic Books Popularity Base" of Sichuan Province. Authoritative linguistic and philological experts in Sichuan Province have been invited to serve as academic advisers in its academic committee, who focus on the popularization and promotion of traditional Chinese cultural classics, the recitation of ancient Chinese poems, the external promotion of traditional Chinese classics, the survey of dialects used in the Ba and Shu areas, the promotion of Mandarin and other characteristic study and implementation. To date, the Base has organized 102 lectures; carried out 24 activities to popularize scientific knowledge, published 10 kinds of books for the popularization of scientific knowledge, held and participated in 14 major academic activities, and run 8 activities for scientific essay solicitation, with 1,188 essays solicited. More than 100,000 people have participated in the activities held by the Base, accumulatively, and the Base has been rated as Excellent Base of Sichuan Province in 2018.


Sichuan Provincial Key Research Base of Philosophy and Social Sciences - Modern Design and Culture Research Center

The Modern Design and Culture Research Center was authorized to be Sichuan Provincial Key Research Base of Philosophy and Social Sciences in 2013. Relying on the multi-disciplinary advantages of rail transit vehicle manufacturing, industrial product design, traditional cultures, art aesthetics and media culture research of SWJTU, the Center strives to promote the interaction between Chinese modern product design and creative industry, accelerate the inspiration and support of traditional cultural resources to modern design, and advance the economic and industrial upgrading and social development from "made in China" to "created in China". The Center has funded 95 projects in the past three years, and the research results cover the three stable research fields, namely, "rail transit vehicle and modern product design", "contemporary aesthetics and design culture" and "the inheritance of southwest ethnic folk cultures and creative industry research". A total of more than 200 achievements including articles, patents, research reports and image materials have been obtained.

The Institute of Man-Machine-Environment System Design Research is set up under the Center for the research in the field of rail transit vehicle and modern product design. The industrial design of the intelligent train on the Beijing-Zhangjiakou High-speed Railway completed by the Center on the basis of the "Fuxing" EMU is an important traffic guarantee for "Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games". In addition, it has also completed a number of design cases with outstanding achievements, such as the vehicle industrial design of Beijing Daxing International Airport Express and the train appearance design of Shanghai Metro Line 17, which were specially reported by People's Daily. The Center has also undertaken the research project: "Creative Design +" Research on the Path to Promote the Upgrading of Industrial Design Products in Sichuan, which was funded by the research field of contemporary aesthetics and design culture. As a result, the article, A Study on Team-based Learning Based on WeChat Public Platform: The Case of Design and Implementation of Mass Media Management Course has been included in SSCI journal. The research result in the field of the inheritance of southwest ethnic folk cultures and creative industry: A Study on the Firing Technology and Cultural Connotations of Yingjing Black Earthenware has been published in core journals such as Zhuangshi (listed in CSSCI) and Journal of Machine Design (listed in CSCD). In addition, the Center has funded a series of interdisciplinary and cross-industrial research projects such as The Intelligent Product Design of Rail Transit Driven by Intelligent Mobility Demand, and A Study on Experiential Knowledge of Gesture Interaction Based on Natural Context.



Sichuan Provincial Key Research Base of Philosophy and Social Sciences -The Center for Aging Industry Development Research

The Center for Aging Industry Development Research was Conferred by Sichuan Federation of Social Sciences Associations as a provincial-level key research base. The Center is committed to explaining General Secretary Xi Jinping's new ideas, thoughts, strategies and research to effectively deal with China's population aging, comprehensively promoting the high-quality development of Sichuan to actively cope with the aging population, and relying on the discipline of public administration of the School of Public Affairs and Law of SWJTU and National Interdisciplinary Institute on Aging to integrate the resources inside and outside the university, inside and outside the province, at home and abroad to build an interdisciplinary and trans-regional provincial key research base for social sciences.

Three research directions are set up in the Center, namely the management & public policy of the aging industry, the aging industry & aged care service system, the science and technology for the aged & industrial innovation.

The Center now has 21 full-time and part-time researchers, who have undertaken more than 20 projects listed in Major Projects to Study and Develop Marxist Theory, Major Projects to be Supported by the National Social Science Fund of China, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the National Working Committee on Ageing, Sichuan Provincial Government, and Major Consulting Projects at provincial and municipal level, and published more than 10 academic works and more than 30 articles and consulting reports.
