From November 21 to 30, 2019, 20 master’s and 4 doctoral students of SWJTU visited Singapore on the"Double First-Class" Students Global Competency Enhancement Program and Jianhou Postgraduate Academic Literacy Enhancing Overseas Practice Program.
During the 10-day activity, focusing on the theme of "Urban Transportation Management In Singapore", students completed course learning at Nanyang Technological University and National University of Singapore, and paid a survey visit to government agencies and outstanding enterprises such as the URA Centre (URA), National Design Centre (NDC), Land Transport Authority (LTA), Housing and Development Board (HDB) and Old Ford Motor Factory.
Study tour to Nanyang Technological University and National University of Singapore
Guided by "Introduction to and Analysis of Comprehensive Urban Transportation and Land Development Mode in Singapore", program participants studied "Green Mobility and Integrated Urban Transport System in Singapore", conducted research on professional technologies like "Road and Underground Pipeline Detection and Repair Technology" and "Traffic Tunnel Engineering Technology in Island Country", analyzed opportunities and challenges of Singapore in the era of advanced transportation technology, proposed the co-establishment of rail transit-oriented metropolitan area and the development of new cities, and actively made a discussion on issues like "How to Set Unified Objective Standards for Pipeline Detection through AI Technology" and "How to Avoid Rock Creep Leading to Structural Strength Reduction and Potential Safety Hazard".
To learn about the development of modern integrated transportation in Singapore more directly, students took the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) and the Light Rail Transit (LRT) to experience the "people-oriented" design idea and the strategic and reasonable planning for land resource in the process of modern integrated transportation development, so as to boost the further integration of curriculum research and cultural experience.
The course learning was carried out in groups and involved different disciplines and specialties, enabling students to enhance capabilities of teamwork and communication. Students of each group combined their own discipline advantages with development need, discussed and integrated academic views after daily courses, and made personal practice reports.
Finally, students of each group delivered a completion report based on a subject inspired by the early course learning. "Study and Application of High Temperature Superconducting Maglev Technology and High Speed Maglev System Based on Low Vacuum Pipeline", "Get through the Last Kilometer of Green Traffic"... SWJTU Students showed their rigorous scholarship through rich and creative completion reports, which were highly praised by Robert Tiong, a professor at Nanyang Technological University.
The"Double First-Class" Students Global Competency Enhancement Program and Jianhou Postgraduate Academic Literacy Enhancing Overseas Practice Program, co-organized by Graduate School and Office of International Cooperation and Exchanges, is toimprove students’ abilities to analyze regional, global and cross-cultural issues, understand and appreciate world view of other people, communicate with people of different cultural backgrounds in an open, proper and effective manner, and take actions for collective well-being and sustainable development.
