Mass mid-term inspection on 2020 undergraduate graduation projects (theses)

From April 9 to April 17, the University organized a mass mid-term inspection on all the 2020 undergraduate graduation projects (theses). Prof. Feng Xiaoyun, Vice President, and experts from the university-level supervision team partook and supervised this inspection.

To improve the overall quality of graduation projects (theses), the university had actively formulated the mid-term inspection program since mid-March, and made arrangements for the Schools to examine all the graduation projects. In addition, a total of 841 students’ projects (theses) in 82 groups had been randomly selected for university-level inspection, and the whole process was supervised by 21 experts specially appointed for this purpose.

In the special period of pandemic control and prevention, a wide array of network tools such as Tencent Meeting, ZOOM, Ding Talk, QQ E-classroom were employed for the online defense. This is the first online mid-term inspection in the university’s 124 years of history. Moreover, the Schools of Electrical Engineering, Information Science and Technology, Transportation and Logistics, Architecture, Economics and Management, Life Science and Engineering, Mathematics, and the Center of Psychological Research and Counseling had organized on-line defense for all their students.

Graduation project (thesis) plays an essential role in the cultivation of undergraduate students. The university had published the Southwest Jiaotong University's Work Program on Epidemic Prevention and Control and Quality Assurance of 2020 Undergraduate Graduation Projects (Theses) to provide guideline and schedule for graduation projects. Besides, instruction on the graduation projects (theses) were required to be organized online to minimize the impact of the pandemic.  

Though the prevention and control of the pandemic have posed many challenges to the completion of graduation projects (theses), all the supervisors tided over this hard time and supervised the preparation process via different online platforms.

“In the face of the pandemic, the University and schools worked together to overcome the difficulties through the flexible integration of ‘Internet + Education’.” Feng Xiaoyun said in the video defense, “Judging from the results of inspection, we can see that all students, supervisors and Schools were fully prepared for this inspection”. The successful completion of this mid-term inspection, especially the online defense, provides experience and an exemplary model for the next stage of work. Meanwhile, for problems like inappropriate selection of topics and slow progress of some students projects found in the inspection, the Schools will also timely adjust the guidance program and supervise the progress accordingly. She expected that all students would take the mid-term inspection as an opportunity to polish their graduation projects (theses) and endeavor to get good grades in the graduation project (thesis) defense.
