Professor Wang Chenping, alumnus of 1983, was nominated ASCE Class 2021 Distinguished Member by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). This is the second time that the alumnus from the University has been awarded such a title after the nomination of Lin Tongyan in 1984.

Distinguished Member of ASCE, abbreviated as Dist. M. ASCE, was first granted by the American Society of Civil Engineers in 1853. The title was originally given as Honorary Member and changed into the present one in 2007. As the highest honor in the field of civil engineering in the United States, ASCE nominates about 10 members or fellows as distinguished members every year. After over 160 years since the first nomination, more than 600 civil engineers have won this honor all over the world.

Wang Chenping, alumnus of 1983 from the Programme of Transportation Engineering, serves as a professor of Oklahoma State University. As a world-renowned expert in automatic detection of transportation infrastructure, Prof. Wang has gained many great academic achievements. He invented 3D laser sensor and the software and hardware technology based on deep learning which have been widely applied in many countries. He pays special attention to the development of his Alma Mater, and has collaborated with the University for a long time. In 2013, he co-founded the International Journal of Rail Transportation (IJRT) with academician Zhai Wanming and acts as its co-chief editor. IJRT has now been included into SCI and become one of the most important academic journals in the field of Rail Transportation.
