With the rapid progress of artificial intelligence (AI) technology, generative AI writing tools have sparked widespread attention and discussion in the higher education sector. In response, a multidisciplinary team of experts from Southwest Jiaotong University has jointly authored the Generative AI Writing Guide V1.0 (hereinafter referred to as the Guide) officially launched in the autumn semester of 2024. The Guide aims to provide valuable reference and guidance for universities and society in the application of generative AI writing, helping both faculty and students better understand and utilize generative AI in writing, and fostering its integration into university writing education.
The Guide is divided into three sections. The first section introduces the fundamental theories of generative AI writing, its application scenarios, as well as associated risks and regulations. The second elaborates on the features and methodologies of generative AI writing, and presents commonly used AI writing tools. The third emphasizes generative AI writing as a new model of human-machine collaboration, which broadens the scope of writing and enhances writing efficiency while also posing new challenges.
In addition, the Guide examines the potential risks associated with generative AI writing, clarifies the role of AI tools in the writing process, and outlines measures to prevent academic misconduct to ensure proper citing of AI-generated content and uphold academic integrity and ethical standards. Through specific case studies, it provides norms and recommendations for the application of AI writing in university education, covering both general and specialized writing intended for learning and research purposes.
The team behind the Guide comprises experts from diverse fields, including Chinese language and literature, communications, computer science, AI, communication engineering, electrical engineering and automation, physics, advertising design, library and information, and education. The Guide thus embodies a rich fusion of interdisciplinary expertise.
Looking forward, the team will continue to refine the Guide in line with the ongoing advances in generative AI writing technology, and to develop relevant general education courses that will provide more comprehensive and in-depth guidance for the use of generative AI writing in universities and beyond.
