Over 7,000 graduates of 2020 at Southwest Jiaotong University (SWJTU) will complete their defense for their graduation design (thesis) before June 5.

"What methods are employed in the course of face recognition?" asked Prof. Yang Dan, President of the University, in meeting room 272 of the administration building on Xipu Campus on the morning of May, 28, at the on-line defense of Xiao Ziyang, a 2020 graduate majoring in software engineering at the School of Information Science and Technology, for his graduation thesis entitled "Face Recognition System Based on Micro-services".

After listening to the work report by Cui Kai, Director of the Dean’s Office, and the students' graduation defense, President Yang highly commended on the painstaking efforts invested in and the efficient organization of online teaching and graduation defense.

Yang pointed out that cultivation of talents is the mission of universities and undergraduate education the cornerstone. The confrontation of challenges brought by the Covid-19 pandemic, as a blessing in disguise, avails us of the opportunity to explore and effect quality online teaching resources to make up for the deficiencies in classroom instructions. Consequently, it is imperative to step up the efforts in the integration of online and offline teaching and to reasonably utilize the global quality teaching resources.

Furthermore, Yang stressed that whether students can graduate successfully is of paramount influence on their whole lives. Graduation design (thesis) constitutes a significant link in their undergraduate studies, which also serves as the final gateway for the assessment of undergraduate teaching quality.

It is reported that the defense is carried out online and the judges assess students’ graduation design (thesis) based on thesis quality, design presentation, defense, question-answer process and other procedures.
