Essential Scientific Indicators (ESI) is a basic analysis and evaluation tool launched in 2001 by Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) to measure the performance of researches and track the development trend in science. Based on the statistics of a 10-year cycle, ESI is updated every two months. As an important tool widely used to evaluate academic performance and impact, this citation-based database ranks countries, research institutions, journals, papers and scientists respectively based on the Total Cites (i.e. ranking the Total Cites of papers published by various institutions worldwide in the past 10 years) for each of the 22 different disciplines.
