On November 28th, Guo Xueqing, a postgraduate student in Translation and Interpreting at the School of Foreign Languages, won the grand prize at the 2nd National Speaking Competition on Area Studies held in Zhuhai, Guangdong. Han Qinru, a master candidate of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL) from the same school, won the award of excellence. Zhang Xi, the tutor, was named “Excellent Tutor”, and the University was granted the “Excellent Organization Award” among all the participating colleges and universities.
This Competition was sponsored by the Alliance of Colleges and Universities in the Cultivation of Talents on National and Regional Studies, the School of International Studies of Sun Yat-sen University as well as the Academy of Belt and Road Initiative of Sun Yat-sen University. More than 400 students from universities such as Southwest Jiaotong University, Sun Yat-sen University, Nankai University and Beijing Foreign Studies University, etc. registered for the Competition, and over 140 excellent students attended the final after the preliminaries.
The School of Foreign Languages attaches great importance to national and regional studies. At the Competition, the participants presented their viewpoints on both the studies of nations and areas and analyzed the status quo of the world from different levels and perspectives, demonstrating modern Chinese college students’ perceptions of China's epidemic prevention, Sino-foreign cooperation, the Belt and Road Initiative and other major concerns of the world. The Competition also provides a new platform for contemporary college students to unleash their talents and exchange their views on national and regional studies.
