The gold medal goes to a SWJTU team consisting of Zhang Hansheng, Wang Haoyuan and Zheng Xingyu at the Asian final of the International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC). The Contest was held at Northwestern Polytechnical University from April 16 to 18 with 291 participating teams from universities across the country, including Tsinghua University, Peking University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Fudan University and Zhejiang University. Initiated by the Association for Computing Machinery of United States in 1970 and open to college student of the whole world, this contest aims at solving real-world problems with computers and developing college students' ability to cooperate, create, and innovate. Over the past 50 years, dubbed as the “Olympics” in the computer field and “the contest to cultivate the next generation of information technology leaders”, ICPC has become a challenging educational project to change the traditional teaching mode and broaden the students’ global horizons, attracting many elites in the fields of basic mathematics, computing theory, programming practice, and cross-disciplines.
The Dean’s Office, the School of Information Science and Technology, Institute of Artificial Intelligence and other relevant departments of the University rendered full support in the preparation for this contest. The School of Information Science and Technology provided the team of Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) with venues, equipment, and other assistances, created a group of supervisors headed by Prof. Li Tianrui and composed of Huang Haiyu, Yu Xiuying, Zhao Hongyu and other distinguished teachers. They offered training sessions and selected students to participate in high-level competitions such as the International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) and China Collegiate Programming Contest (CCPC), thus paving the way for the pursuit of the highest honours in the programming competitions.
