From December 24 to 26, Southwest Jiaotong University hosted the Asia-Pacific regional TrainRail Hackathon. This event was sponsored by International Rail Education & Training Board (TrainRail) of International Union of Railways (UIC) and supervised by the Education Alliance of the Belt and Road International Railway Talents and Joint Research Center of Belt and Road International Organizations Science and Technologies.

The theme of the two-day Trainrail Hackathon is " How can rail be resilient in the face of pandemics?" 18 regional competitions were launched in China, attracting more than 65 teams with a total of 300 contestants from Jiaotong universities, railway vocational colleges, railway industry and research institutions. After 48 hours of wrestling and contending, 18 teams came to the fore, among which three SWJTU teams won the first prize. They will represent Asia-Pacific region to participate in the global finals of UIC TrainRail Hackathon held in Moscow, Russia in May 2022.
The University has actively cooperated with UIC in recent years and yielded fruitful results. In 2019, UIC TrainRail was officially inaugurated and the University acted as its vice chair. This global competition sponsored by UIC TrainRail aims to shed new light on and bring vitality to the development of rail transport industry through hackathon, thus heightening the younger generation's understanding of the spirit of innovation and raising their awareness of cooperation and cultural exchange. As the oldest railway university, SWJTU has fulfilled its duty as vice chair of UIC TrainRail and successfully staged the first global competition of TrainRail hackathon.
