On March 25, Professor Lu Qibing’s team won the second prize of the Science and Technology Award with their project “the application of complete technology and equipment for rail flash-butt welding on high-speed seamless rail” at the Sichuan Provincial Science and Technology Awarding Conference.
Before 2006, China had to rely completely on high-priced imports of rail flash-butt welding equipment for lack of advanced rail-butt welding process and quality control technology. Since the 1990s, Professor Lu Qibing's team from the School of Materials Science and Engineering has studied the impact of the rail flash-butt welding process on the quality of the welded joint, carried out researches on the technology and equipment in this field, and improved the imported equipment after analyzing its problems. After relentless efforts, they have filled the gap in this field, and enabled Chinese railway workers to “wield our own high-speed railways with our own technologies and equipment".
