With the recent rolling out of results from National Band A Discipline Contests, teachers and students at the School of Electrical Engineering broke its best record in history, with 24 national first prize winners and 295 winners of awards above provincial level.
Students of the School raked in three first prizes in the National University Contest on Intelligent Robotic Innovations, three first prizes in the Lanqiao Cup National Software and Information Technology Professionals Competition, one first prize in the National University Students Intelligent Car Race, one first prize in the National College Students Embedded Chip and System Design Competition, and two first prizes in the National Competition of Innovation and Creation in Mechanical Engineering for Chinese University Students – the Logistics Technology (of Crane) Creation Competition.
Gold, Silver and Bronze at China International College Students’ “Internet+” Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition
(Sichuan Provincial Competition)
The innovation and entrepreneurship team from the School of Electrical Engineering won two provincial gold, one silver and one bronze medals in China International College Students’ “Internet+” Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition (Sichuan Provincial Competition), held at Southwest Petroleum University on August 4-5, 2022. The project of “Hydrogen Core – Leader of Intelligent Management System of Hydrogen Power” supervised by Prof. Chen Weirong and that of “Smart Synchrony – the Pioneer of Rail Transit Energy Management System with ‘Four-network Integration’” supervised by Prof. Chen Minwu exhibited outstanding performance in the competition for the gold prize with defense scores both ranking first in their respective groups. In addition, they were also recommended as the ones among a total of five from the University to participate in the national finals of the 8th China International College Students’ “Internet+” Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition.、
China International College Students’ “Internet+” Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition was proposed by Premier Li Keqiang and co-sponsored by 12 ministries and commissions including the Ministry of Education and different local provincial governments. Since 2015, the competition has attracted more than 10 million college students from five continents, over one hundred countries and thousand colleges and universities and become the most influential throughout the country.
The 5th National University Contest on Intelligent Robotic Innovation
Students from the School of Electrical Engineering won three first prizes, two second prizes and two third prizes after a fierce competition with more than 700 teams at the national finals of the 5th National University Contest on Intelligent Robotic Innovation held in Yuyao, Zhejiang Province on August 28, 2022, yielding the best results of the University in this event and ranking among the top in the country. The team supervised by Prof. Wang Qingyuan won the national highest score in the Robot Confrontation Group.

Founded in 2017, the National University Contest on Intelligent Robotic Innovation is sponsored by Chinese Association of Higher Education in collaboration with National Steering Committee of Engineering Graphics Teaching under the Ministry of Education, and the Organizing Committee of National University Contest on Intelligent Robotic Innovation. Aiming at “Better, Faster, Stronger” targets and cultivating students’ ability to formulate problems as a start point, this Competition has developed a talent cultivation chain integrating the procedures of problem, solution, creation and later development, and specifically at this time, the students presented their creations on three themes: Creative Design – Domestic Robot, Creative Competition – Rubik’s Cube Robot, and Creative Grapple – Robot Confrontation.
Lanqiao Cup National Software and Information Technology Professionals Competition
3 first prizes, 4 second prizes and 11 third prizes went to the students of the School of Electrical Engineering at the national finals of the 13th Lanqiao Cup National Software and Information Technology Professionals Competition organized by the School and held in Southwest Jiaotong University. The students participated in the electronic competitions, including MCU Design and Development, EDA Design and Development, and Embedded Design and Development, after selections through the three levels of university, provincial, and national competitions. The University was also granted the awards of the Best Performance University and Excellent Organizer.
The Lanqiao Cup Contest is a national discipline competition of IT for college students sponsored by the Talent Exchange Center of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. As an IT professional competition with national authority, coverage and influence, the competition aims to cultivate and select IT talents and focuses on the key areas of information technology urgently needed for the current social development. More than 75,000 participants from more than 1,300 universities such as Peking University, Tsinghua University, Fudan University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University competed on the arena of this grand event.
Breakthrough at the National University Students Intelligent Car Race
The team consisting of Zhang Shilong, Liu Yi and Chen Zhiling from the Programme of Electrical Engineering and Intelligent Control won for the first time the national championship with an on-line race time of 47.2s in the extreme off-road group at the 17th National University Students Intelligent Car Race concluded on August 25th, 2022, marking a breakthrough of Southwest Jiaotong University in this Competition.
Intelligent cars created by contestants are engaged in the race at the creative science and technology competition, an exploratory engineering practice for college students across the country. Supported by the Ministry of Education, the Competition develops college students' abilities in comprehensive knowledge application and basic engineering practice, foster their innovative consciousness, and stimulate their interest and potential in scientific research and exploration. Both interesting and spectacular, the Competition covers multiple programmes and disciplines such as automatic control, pattern recognition, sensor technology, electronic engineering, electrical engineering, computer, machinery, automobile, etc., and meet the demands of the rapid development of automotive electronics.
National College Students Embedded Chip and System Design Competition
On August 5-7, 2022, the National Finals of the 5th National College Students Embedded Chip and System Design Competition was held in Nanjing. Chen Sihui, Luo Binxin and Gao Sitie's team "Ah ddd" of the School of Electrical Engineering won the first prize in the national application contest with their Anti-epidemic Robot for Freshmen Orientation, performing the best in the history of the School in the competition.
The Competition improves college students’ abilities in independent innovative design and engineering practice in Embedded Chip and System Design as well as Programmable Logic Device (PLD) Application, cultivates students’ innovative thinking and teamwork spirit, and enables them to solve complex engineering problems, promoting the cooperation of colleges and enterprises in talent training and enlivening the academic atmosphere of campus innovation and entrepreneurship.
Logistics Technology (Crane) Innovation Competition of Mechanical Engineering Innovation Competition for Chinese College Students
On August 29, the final of the Logistics Technology (Crane) Innovation Competition of Mechanical Engineering Innovation Competition for Chinese College Students, with the theme of “material handling robots”, drew the curtain at Southwest Jiaotong University. The joint team represented by technical backbones from the School of Electrical Engineering was awarded two national first prizes after the fierce competition.
The Competition, as one of the professional competitions of “Mechanical Engineering Innovation Competition for Chinese College Students”, is sponsored by Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society to improve college students’ scientific innovation awareness, encourage their active participation in scientific and technological innovation activities and engineering practice, and enhance their capabilities in material handling equipment design and craft production according to true demands. Through the competition, the students’ visions of scientific and technological innovation are broadened, and their awareness of material handling equipment applications heightened in various fields of the national economy.
National Undergraduate Electronic Design Contest (Sichuan Provincial Contest)
On 5th August, Students from the School of Electrical Engineering claimed 6 provincial first prizes, 3 second prizes, and 3 third prizes at the provincial level competition of the National Undergraduate Electronic Design Contest in Sichuan. All the first prizes in SWJTU teams went to the students from the School, and the scores for A-level question contests supervised by Prof. Dong Jinwen, ranked the first in Sichuan province.
The academic contests for college students is advocated by the Ministry of Education and co-sponsored by the Department of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education and the Department of Personnel and Education of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. It includes not only theoretical design but also practical production and integration of theory with practice, so as to strengthen students’ theoretical foundations and practical innovation abilities in all respects, and cultivate their practical innovation awareness, basic capabilities, and spirits of teamwork.
In recent years, the School of Electrical Engineering has placed emphasis on developing and improving students’ practical innovation abilities, and carried out the talent development mechanism of “Innovating Electrical Engineering and Drawing Intelligent Future”, and established a multistep growth model of “know-first research-further research-deep research (extension)”, giving full play to the role of practical contests in talent trainings. Besides, the School has motivated the students to innovate through contests and competitions, SRTP programs, and multi-disciplinary teams, and improved students’ abilities of solving complex problems with the integration of multiple disciplines, rendering support to the practice of the “First-class universities and disciplines of the world” initiative with high-quality talents.
