To support the Global Civilization Initiative and promote the development of a human community with a shared future, the First World Conference of Classics was inaugurated in Beijing on November 7, and President Xi Jinping sent a letter of congratulation to mark the occasion. The conference with the theme of “Classical Civilizations and the Modern World” seeks to trace the origins of human thought, crystalize the wisdom of history, and explore the tradition of human civilization, aiming to strengthen the theoretical foundation for enhancing civilizational exchanges and mutual understanding, provide insight and inspiration for addressing contemporary global challenges, and contribute intellectual energy to the advancement of humanity.

The Conference was co-organized by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the Chinese Ministry of Education, the Chinese Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Greek Ministry of Culture, and the Greek Academy of Sciences in Athens. Over 600 experts and scholars of Classics from more than 30 countries, along with cultural figures, youth representatives, and media personalities, attended the event.

More than 30 international scholars from 16 countries participated in the “Exploring China in Sichuan” program from November 3 to 5, an important component of the Conference, to deepen their understanding of China and explore its rich cultural heritage.

The School of Foreign Languages at SWJTU selected more than ten teachers and graduate students majoring in translation and interpreting, all with good English proficiency and excellent coordination skills. Led by Chen Lin, Assistant Professor of the Department of Translation and Interpreting, they provided interpreting services throughout the event, assisted with guest reception, and translated relevant documents. The SWJTU team also guided the international scholars on visits to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, Sichuan Museum, Jinsha Ruins Museum, and Sanxingdui Museum. These visits offered the scholars a chance to experience the unique charm of Chinese culture and gain a deeper understanding of China’s modernization and cultural evolution.

The teachers and students accomplished their tasks, offering professional language services for experts and scholars from all over the world. Their efforts ensured the smooth progress of the event and facilitated meaningful exchanges between Chinese and international guests, helping to build a bridge for cross-cultural dialogue.
