On September 9, the Discipline of Social Sciences at Southwest Jiaotong University was officially included for the first time in the top 1 % of ESI world ranking according to the latest issue of Essential Science Indicators (ESI) of Clarivate Analytics covering the data from January 1, 2011 to June 30, 2021. The emergence of the fifth discipline in the top 1% of ESI world ranking after the Disciplines of Engineering, Computer Science, Material Science and Chemistry marks a major step forward in the development of disciplines at the University.

Before the inclusion, the Discipline Information Department of the University’s Library released several issues of Brief Report on the Analysis of ESI Disciplines of Southwest Jiaotong University, and predicted that the Discipline of Social Sciences at our university was the one most likely to be included in the top 1% of ESI world ranking according to the statistical analyses. The top 1% of ESI world ranking list contains the disciplines of social sciences from 1,780 institutions in the world, among which the one at our University ranks No. 1,702. At present, 239 papers authored by the faculty and students from the Discipline of Social Sciences of SWJTU have been published and cited for 1,808 times with an average rate of 7.56 citations per paper, and 7 among them are Highly Cited Papers of ESI.
